Once you believe in Evolution; eugenics must also be believed

The idea of eugenics does not necessitate anyone having control over other people's right to breed. Certain methods of eugenics do. Other methods are entirely voluntary. Scanning the embryo for diseases, for example, is a method of eugenics. People have the option, once discovering the results, to terminate the pregnancy. They are not forced, just allowed to make an informed decision. Another method allows couples who carry genetic disorders to weed out sperm and eggs that will pass on the trait

I think the underlying problem is that the idea of eugenics necessitates some people having control over other people's right to breed, which necessitates some form of submission or slavery, which necessitates loss of what most people consider to be their basic rights.

Herbert Spencer is often cited as the intellectual godfather of the eugenics movement but the opposite is true. Charles Darwin could arguably be given that dubious title. Spencer believed that a more fit society must be heterogeneous and that people must be free to choose who to marry. That in this way, genetic progress happens naturally. But genetics is almost irrelevant with respect to evolution. Human progress is almost entirely cultural and one day won't be biological at all.

Eugenic is artificial purifying and natural selection, has nothing to with breeding super race of rulers. And of course, it should not be associated with heinous crimes that resulted from radical interpretations of negative eugenics as there are many methods of positive eugenics fully compatible with modern democratic societies.

I heartily agree.

Let me clarify in saying, I 'like' this video because I would like for all to read quotes from historically prominent people.

The basic principals of eugenics have nothing to do with race or murder. It is simply improving the genetics of a population. There are many ways to do this and this is where the confusion arises. Many people do not differentiate between the idea and the solution. Eugenics says what needs to be done, it does not say how it should be done. |
